Minnesota Minerals Education Workshop

2008 workshop dates: August 5-7
Workshop location: Ely, MN

The Minnesota Minerals Education Workshop consists of a day-long series of classroom sessions followed by a day and a half-day of geology field trips and tours of mining operations. Topics covered include general geology, rock and mineral identification and mineland reclamation. Classes are taught by geologists, educators and minerals and mining industry professionals.

Teachers getting hands-on experiences exploring Minnesota's geology.
Field trips provide participants with the opportunity to explore local geology with recognized experts and collect specimens to take back to the classroom.

2006 workshop participants toured the geology and mineral resources of Duluth and Lake Superior's North Shore.
Classroom sessions provide an opportunity to try a variety of hands-on activities.

Participants take home rock and mineral sample kits, audiovisual materials, classroom exercises, resource guides and information about the field trip sites and mining operations they tour.

The workshop is held each year in early August.

Limited enrollment

To provide the best learning experience possible, enrollment for the workshop is limited. Note that this is a popular event, which fills quickly.

Academic credit

Certification for contact credit is available to participants who complete all classroom sessions and field trips. Participants may also be eligible to earn undergraduate and graduate credit through a cooperating university. Additional course fees and work assignments for academic credit are determined by the host university.
